It is sometimes believed the world’s true heros are born under auspicious circumstances, with stars aligning, the sages of the age seeking out the children to guide them in their early years, and guardian angels protecting them from birth.
Ku was born at night, but the foul smog of burning bodies obscured any astrological reading, the sages of his age wouldn’t dare come near the orc raiding party’s camp, and no one in his age believed any angels survived the battle against the reigning chaos.
However, Ku did not aspire to become a true hero. Ku was born into slavery to a massive orc raiding party. His only aspiration was survival and escape.
Ku spent his time as an orc slave half starved, beaten, and tasked with picking fallen bodies for loot and gear before burning the corpses. The pier of burning bodies was the Orc leader’s, Urgor, signature.
Ku found his nourishment from the scraps of found he scrounged from the dead and dying. He never ate too much, however, because the orcs had a habit of eating the slaves if food became scarce, as it often did.
Perhaps it was all the time Ku spent around death, but as Ku grew to hear and eventual see the spirits of those who have passed on. Gradually, Ku learned to speak with these spirits and have them aid him in finding food or hiding from angry orcs looking to vent on slaves.
There was a night that Ku’s forever heightened connection with these spirits. The orc party was hungry and had eaten through all the medium sized slaves. Ku was still too small to first on the dinner menu, but his parents made the cut. Ku was forced to watch as his parents were cooked over a large fire.
That night Ku cried beside the ashes and embers of the large cooking fire. Ku cried out for a spirit to join him and help him escape this horrible life of slavery. Ku sought a spirit of fire, like the fires that killed his parents, to strike down his oppressors. Then the fire primordial spirit, who Ku simply named Companion, appeared.
With the aid of his spirit companion as a diversion and Ku stole away from camp. Unfortunately for Ku, his life did not improve much as he traveled bare landscape filled with vicious predators. Only the aid of his spirit companion, constant requests to healing spirits, and his natural fade away power kept Ku alive.
A year into his existence in the wild, Ku stumbled across a road with humans manning wagons and horses. Ku only knew humans as fellow slaves and they didn’t generally live very long. Causiously, Ku followed this caravan to something Ku never knew existed, a city.
Ku had found his first relic of civilization, the city of Brokenkeep.
